Recently, I reviewed God and the Transgender Debate by Andrew Walker for the Gospel Coalition’s Themelios Journal. For full disclosure, Andrew is a good friend of mine, but he did not ask me to write this blog post, promote his book, or review it for the journal. I asked to review his book. Furthermore, I am promoting the book and Andrew’s work because I want it to reach as many people as possible. So, here are my reasons:

First, God and the Transgender Debate will acquaint you with the critical issues that are at stake in the current gender debate. Andrew is a fair writer who seeks to understand both sides of the conversation. The world would be a better place if all writers sought to practice the same degree of charity.

Second, God and the Transgender Debate will help you think through the impact that our worldviews have on sexual ethics. In many ways, the transgender debate is as much about the worldviews that we assume as it is about the ethics that we live by in the world. If we do not get back to the essential questions of humanity, we will not get very far in our conversations with those with whom we differ.

Finally, God and the Transgender Debate will challenge you to think deeply about the implications of the Gospel for discipleship. If we would make disciples of Christ, then we must know and apply the Gospel well. We must believe that the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation. We must recognize that true and lasting change is possible, but it is not always immediate. Andrew’s book prepares the reader to love their neighbor with the love of God in Christ as they grow in their understanding of His love for them too.
